“Your worth is never on the table.”

I heard this quote and immediately thought of my clients. “Your worth is NEVER on the table,” as the great coach Amanda Blair said.

Your worth as a human is never on the table for discussion because you were born with it. Every mother knows this about their child because they look at them and see someone who deserves everything. As babies, we are born with all the unique worth we will ever possess.

Then over the course of our childhood and life experiences, we begin to put our worth on the table. It’s up for discussion, often in our own minds.

I will give you an example, the other day I said something that was tactless and hurt the person across from me. I felt terrible especially because I could see the hurt in the woman’s eyes.

You see my comment was thoughtless, but it doesn’t automatically make me a bad person. I apologized and the person moved on. Why can’t I forgive myself too?

Thankfully, I have become aware of this and stopped my mind from wondering into hours of self-berating. I am still working on this though, it doesn’t happen immediately.

I had trouble forgiving myself because my worth was on the table [for a moment until I took it off]. You see in my mind; one stupid comment became an excuse to be mean to myself and allow my mind to go to some crazy places. I went down the road of seeing myself as a bad person because I said one bad comment.

Does this happen to you? Does one little thing, set you off to be extremely mean to yourself?

I completely understand. It takes work to take your worth off the table and begin to give yourself grace and ease in life.
