A Dialogue on Life Post-Brain Injury

The other day, I had the pleasure of speaking with a man who graduated from the Doman Method. He was brain-injured with severe physical disabilities and now is able to walk and live a totally normal life. He and I were speaking about many things that we can both relate to, having both graduated from the same Doman Program. But one of the things that got us both riled up is the group of people who say, "just accept your child as they are."

It is totally infuriating for people who formerly lived with brains that were injured and therefore not working at their best, to think about staying trapped. That is what a brain injury is - being trapped with a brain that is not functioning. It's terrifying and horrible. No one should have to live through that. Just like no one should have to live with an injured leg.

People who think that we should just "accept" children, with a neurological diagnosis, obviously have no idea what it's like to live in a world with an overwhelming amount of sensory input. They can be so hypersensitive that they hear every single noise in a room, including the refrigerator. Imagine having to live life like that, and the people who love you most tell you that we should just "accept it.

These people mean well, but they have missed two crucial points.

The first is that their child has an injury, and therefore it can be healed. Is it easy to heal? Probably not. But it can be done. We can at least try to give this person a better quality of life.

The second point is that if another muscle in their body, let's say a leg, was injured - everyone would insist you take the child to get it fixed. But we don’t do that with a brain. We just assume nothing can be done and so we give up.

The good news is that I see moms and dads every single day who never give up. They refuse to “accept” the injury and instead are fighting for their kids to live a normal life. Those are the parents I am here to support.
